We started our new year off right with a festive little party New Year's eve. Sportsman-in-Training is finally getting what party's are all about and gets a little excited whenever I say the word. Even though our company had to cancel due to being sick (it seems like everyone has been sick this past week, ick!) we still pulled together a fun little kid friendly meal.
Around here on New Years day it is tradition to eat pork and sauerkraut. I had never heard of that until I met The Sportsman. So we made sure to eat our fill of The Sportsman's momma's pork and sauerkraut for lunch to ensure lots of good luck for the coming year.
Then I took a loooong walk to do some much needed reflecting. It felt good. I might have to make looooong walks part of my New Years resolution list. They feel better then short runs.
And a New Years day is just not complete without fire of some kind. So I made Bananas Foster. It's a little more civilized unlike the kids up the road shooting bottle rockets at me during my walk. Not cool.
What!? You have never made Bananas Foster??
Well here is the recipe just in case you have never tried it. My version is super easy without skimping on delicious. And yes, there really is fire involved.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Melt one stick of butter in a skillet.
2) Add 1 cup of light brown sugar and stir until bubbly.
3) Add 2 chunked up bananas. I like to use pretty ripe ones.
3) Add a dash of cinnamon and a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans.
4) Quickly pour 3/4 cup of spiced rum into the skillet and stir it around one time.
5) Have a lighter on hand and just kinda bop your hand into the vicinity of the center of the pan with the lighter lit. Mine usually ignites for a mere 3 seconds.
6) Cook it a bit longer if you want the alcohol to cook out. This step is not necessary unless your serving to children :-)
Serve immediately over vanilla bean ice cream. Enjoy!

MMMMM. Yum! I need to go buy bananas tonight!
